Attend UC Berkeley for 4 years and graduated with a degree in Physics. Joined the Navy to avoid being drafted and was sent to Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA to study Russian. Was stationed in Japan and Kim joined me there for last year. After getting an early out, I went to Golden Gate University at nights while working as a physicist for PG&E at the Dept. of Engineering Research. Kim and I lived in Danville, CA (played tennis with Alma Nelson (her name in HS). After passing the Calif. Bar exam, we moved to Wisconsin, wher I worked for Trane Heating and Air Conditioning Co. as a patent attorney. Became Chief Patent Counsel and faced with a next logical career move to NY, decided to seek a different job back on the West Coast. Joined a patent law firm in Seattle, became a partner and in 1995, left to open my own firm in Bellevue, WA. Our first son, Sean, was born after we returned to the U.S. from Japan. He still lives with us and works for Mic!
rosoft. Brian, our second son, used to work for Microsoft, but left to join a startup company, which recently was bought by a Chinese company. He will continue working there, but lives nearby, so we see him frequently. When Kim and I were 50, we became interested in learning to ride horses and now own 6 Paint horses and ride on local trails as much as the weather permits. Hope to retire in 2-3 years, either to our acreage in the Bend, OR area, or to some other place that looks better, where we will have our horses with us and ride off into the sunset.

| How was adult life different than what you expecte? |
| In almost every way imaginable. I thought I would be a physicist working in a lab. Instead, as a patent attorney, I learn about many different types of technology, which is much more interesting than becoming expert about only one narrow subject. Never had any idea that I would enjoy horses like I do or would live in the FAR northwest. Life has been good. Hope that it continues to be so! |

Plans or goals for the next 5~10 years? |
Gradually withdraw from the patent firm that I now own, turning it over to a new partner (now one of my associates). Retire to Bend, OR area or somewhere else, where we acquire horse property with a barn, arena, etc. Start to enjoy retirement, while continuing to work part time as a patent attorney. |

The reunions are great, because they provide an opportunity to learn what has happened to contemporaries in the same class and appreciate how each of us has changed over the years - both for the good and not so good. The reunions have allowed Kim and I to keep in touch with the friends that we had in high school. For example, next week, we will be having dinner with Clathel Goodwin (Clathel Burke in EHS), who is now married to Bill Goodwin (EHS - Class of 1962). They live in Bellevue, WA. Both Kim & I are looking forward to this dinner, to get to know more about old friends and how their lives are progressing.
When we were in high school, we all tended to associate with those in our cliques, e.g., with the those who were good athletes or those who took college prep courses. It is fun to attend the reunions and have the opportunity to visit with people that you really didn't know all that well when in high school, and to find that they are very interesting people who have had wonderful life experiences. What a great opportunity to expand our own limited horizons!
